Men’s Tennis Wins Comfortably against Morris

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated the University of Minnesota Morris on Sunday in the Burns Wellness Fieldhouse 9-0.

Jacob Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) matched a program record with his 53rd career doubles victory as he teamed up with Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) to win 8-1 at the No. 1 spot. He also tied the record for the most No. 1 doubles wins in a career (29). Both of those records belonged to Brendan Anderson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), who set those marks last season.

James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) and Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) won at No. 2 doubles 8-0 and the No. 3 team of Steve Aro (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) won 8-1.

In singles competition, Engelstad at No.1, Mack at No. 2 and Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) at No. 4 all blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Hilpert won at the No. 3 spot 6-0, 6-1 to move into third all-time for career singles wins (49).

At No. 5, Alex Nagle (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-1. The final winner on the day was Dan Mauro (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius HS) at No. 6 by scores of 6-4, 6-1. The Cougars fall to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

The Saints (15-7, 9-0 UMAC) will close out their regular season at home next Saturday when they do battle with Northwestern College for the regular season championship. The match is scheduled to begin at noon at Central High School or at an indoor facility.
