Baseball Pounds Out 20 Hits in Win over Presentation

| By:
Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. – The St. Scholastica baseball team scored at least three runs in four of the first five innings in defeating Presentation College 17-5 in seven innings on Friday at Fossum Field.

The Saints got things going quickly as Jesse Heaton (Heyworth, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic HS ) led off the game by getting hit by a pitch and the next batter, Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS), drove him in with a RBI triple. Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) brought home Jensen with a RBI single and then he later scored on a Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) sacrifice fly to give CSS a 3-0 lead after a half inning.

Presentation plated a run in the bottom of the first, but the Saints answered with four runs on the top of the second and the top of the third. In both innings, Flagstad registered two-RBI doubles as the Saints built their lead to 11-1.

Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) had a RBI double in the fourth and then hit a three-run home run in the fifth as part of a five-run inning to extend the CSS margin to 17-1. Casareto was only a triple short from hitting for the cycle.

Presentation tried to extend the game past seven innings by scoring one run in the fifth and three in the sixth, but it wasn't enough as St. Scholastica won by the 10-run mercy rule in seven innings 17-5.

Other than the aforementioned Casareto, Flagstad went 4-for-4 with five RBIs to lead the Saints offense. Peterson, Jensen and Andy Schwantes (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS (Minn.-Duluth)) each drove in two runs with two hits.

Michael Swenson (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) earned the win for the Saints, scattering 11 hits in five innings for his fourth win of the season. Jake Snyder (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit.

The CSS Saints (22-9, 13-0 UMAC) and the PC Saints (11-19, 7-7 UMAC) will conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
