FRIDLEY, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team handed Northwestern College its first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) loss on Tuesday night with a 6-3 victory at the Fridley Lifetime Fitness.
The match was a make-up from March 29 when the teams were scheduled to play at the Baseline Tennis Center, but rain washed it out.
The Saints won two of the three doubles matches to begin. Two of the doubles matches went to a tiebreaker with each team winning. The No. 1 team of
Jacob Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and
Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) won 9-8 (11-9). The No. 3 duo of
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) also won 8-5.
In singles play,
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) defeated 2010's UMAC Player of the Year, Caleb Kauss, at the No. 2 spot 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Hilpert won at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-4. At No. 5,
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) won in straight sets 7-5, 6-1. The final CSS winner was
Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) at No. 6 by scores of 6-3, 3-6, (10-7). The loss drops the Eagles to 8-8 overall and 5-1 in the league.
The Saints (13-7, 7-0 UMAC) will be back at home on Saturday when they host Martin Luther College at Duluth's Central High School (weather pending). Action is scheduled to begin at noon.
