Baseball Defeats Warhawks in Dramatic Fashion; Splits Doubleheader

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The CSS baseball team got a win in Whitewater as it split with the 20th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks winning game one 5-4 in ten innings and dropping game two 4-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Saints got a little bit of revenge as it was the Warhawks (18-7) who eliminated CSS from the national tournament a season ago.

The third inning produced six of the nine runs in game one starting with the Saints.  With one run already across in the inning and the bases loaded, Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) tripled to center field to clear the bases and gave St. Scholastica a 4-0 lead.

The Warhawks answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly and an RBI double to cut the lead in half at 4-2 CSS.

The fifth inning brought more runs for Whitewater when Dylan Friend tripled bringing in Matt Beyer to make it just a one-run lead for the Saints.  A sacrifice later in the inning tied the game up at four.

The offense settled down from that point on as Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) held the Warhawks scoreless in innings six through nine.  The Saints couldn't get another run across either and the teams headed to extras.

St. Scholastica didn't waste any time at all in the tenth as Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) knocked Moody in with an RBI single and the Saints took a 5-4 lead.

Jake Nystrom (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) took the mound in the bottom of the 10th and faced only three batters as Whitewater went three-up-three-down and CSS took game one 5-4.

Rogers earned his first win of the season and is now 1-0 while Nystrom picked up his second save of the year.

St. Scholastica continued the offense right away in game two as Jensen got to starting pitcher Tom Kerndt in the first with a groundout that scored Jesse Heaton (Heyworth, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic HS ) to put CSS up 1-0 early on.

The Saint lead didn't last long as Marty Herum knocked in two runs in the bottom half of the inning to give Whitewater the one run advantage at 2-1.

Whitewater went on to extend the lead in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly and led 3-1 after four innings of play.

The offense was silent until the seventh inning when Whitewater struck again as an RBI single made it 4-1 Warhawks.

St. Scholastica began a comeback in the eighth when Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) brought in Jensen with a single but it was too little too late for the Saints and Whitewater took game two by a score of 4-2.

Nystrom took the loss for the Saints allowing three runs in four innings and striking out two as his record drops to 4-3.

Juberian had a solid game one going 4-5 with the game-winning RBI, scoring one run and stealing one base.  Moody was 3-7 on the day with three RBIs.

The Saints (21-9, 12-0 UMAC) will resume conference play this weekend when they travel to Aberdeen, S. D. to take on the Presentation Saints (11-16, 7-6 UMAC) for a three-game series.  Friday's game begins at 3 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon.  Stay tuned to csssaints.com for all game coverage information.
