DULUTH, Minn. – Senior
Jacob Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) broke a pair of program records and the St. Scholastica men's tennis team won its 100th consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) dual match with a pair of wins over North Central University and Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday.
The Saints began the day with a 9-0 victory over North Central for their 100th straight UMAC win. CSS has not lost a UMAC dual match since the 1997 season.
Engelstad, who was tied with Kyle Hawley (2000-04) with 54 career singles wins entering the day, defeated Alex Sanjari 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot to break the program record. He also would win at No. 1 doubles with partner
Tom Schneuer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) by a score of 8-0. That would tie him for the most combined wins (singles + doubles) in program history.
In the team's second match of the day against Bethany Lutheran, Engelstad teamed with
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) to win at No. 1 doubles 8-0 for his 50th career doubles win. He then won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1 for 106th career victory (singles + doubles) at CSS, the most of any Saints player ever. His 50 doubles wins are tied for the second-most all-time.
Against the Rams,
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) at No. 2 and
Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) at No. 3 singles both shut out their opponents. The Aro brothers,
Mike Aro (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) at No. 4 and
Steve Aro (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) at No. 6, also won in singles play. Daniel Mauro was the last singles winner at the No. 5 spot 6-1, 6-2.
In other doubles action against North Central (1-5, 1-5 UMAC), the No. 2 team of
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) won 8-1 and the No. 3 team of
Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Alex Nagle (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) won 8-2.
Moving onto Bethany Lutheran, who the Saints also defeated 9-0, Mack and Hilpert duplicated their effort in singles play winning by shutout again. Schneuer won at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-1.
Nick Lind (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) won at No. 5 by scores of 6-0, 6-2 and Nagle won at No. 6 by scores of 6-0, 6-1.
The No. 2 doubles team of Mauston and
Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) won 8-1 and the No. 3 team of
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and
Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) won 8-2. The Vikings fall to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
The Saints (12-7, 6-0) will travel to face Northwestern College in a make-up match on Tuesday at the Lifetime Fitness in Fridley. Action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
