Box Score 3 The CSS baseball team took care of business on Saturday afternoon with a three-game sweep of the Martin Luther Knights 13-0, 9-2 and 6-0 at Wade Stadium.
The series with the Knights (1-18, 1-10 UMAC) was originally supposed to be a two-day series, but rain moved all three games to Saturday.
Game one was a defensive battle early as the teams were scoreless through two and a half innings of play.
The Saints opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when
Jesse Heaton (Heyworth, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic HS ) doubled scoring two runs followed by a
Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) double scoring another and CSS took a 3-0 lead.
Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) extended that lead in the fifth when he tripled for the fifth straight game scoring
Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Heaton. Flagstad would later score on a wild pitch and make it 6-0 Saints.
CSS wasn't done in the fifth by any means. After a bases loaded walk,
Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) singled with the bases loaded to score two more and give St. Scholastica a 9-0 lead after five.
Martin Luther errors allowed the Saints to push across four more runs in the sixth inning and earn them a 13-0 victory.
The win marks the 700th victory for St. Scholastica in the baseball program's history.
Jake Snyder (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) went four strong allowing just two hits to earn his first win of the season.
St. Scholastica got on the board a little sooner in game two when
John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS ) drove in Olson for a 1-0 lead after the first.
The Saints' big inning in this game was the second. After an error brought in a run
Jon Kusch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS ) doubled to center field to bring in two runs.
After already scoring once in the inning,
Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) hit his first collegiate home run and when all was said and done the Saints were up 6-0 after two.
CSS was up 9-0 in the fifth when a couple of defensive errors allowed the Knights to score their only two runs of the day to make it 9-2, the score that would remain to be the final.
Joel Wuorio (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) was the winning pitcher for the Saints with four no-hit innings and three strikeouts.
The Saints struck early again in game three when Moody singled up the middle to score Flagstad from second. Juberian knocked Moody in later in the inning and the Saints went up 2-0.
The Saints other four runs came in the third including a two-RBI single from the bat of Henderson and CSS was up 6-0, the score that would remain until the final.
As a team the Saints allowed just one hit in the third game. The combination of
Brian Houdek (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS),
Alex Oachs (Saginaw, Minn./Proctor HS ), Dan Ubi,
Ben Grieger (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and
Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) combined for eight strikeouts and no walks as Houdek earned his first win of the season.
Henderson had a good day at the plate for the Saints going 2-5 with a home run, four RBIs and four runs scored. Flagstad had another good day as well knocking in four runs and scoring four times as well.
The Saints (20-8, 12-0) will be on the road next Tuesday for a regional test as they take on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks (15-6) in Whitewater. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. with game two to follow.
