Saints Chop Down LumberJacks in Doubleheader Sweep

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The CSS baseball team found some offense to snag a doubleheader sweep of the Northland LumberJacks 8-5 and 19-3 at Wade Stadium on Tuesday evening.

With the victories on Tuesday the Saints sweep the season series with the 'Jacks (9-15, 4-5 UMAC) after defeating them a week before 12-3 in Ashland.

Northland began the scoring early in the first when Travis Hendrickson knocked in a run with a single.

The Saints came right back in the bottom half with two runs from the bat of Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) after a two-run single and CSS was up 2-1 after one.

St. Scholastica scored one in the second and had a run across in the third when Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) singled up the middle to score John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS ) and Andy Schwantes (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and CSS took a 6-1.

The Saints and LumberJacks traded runs in the fourth and in the fifth Northland began a comeback.  With the bases loaded Colin Moberly doubled to deep center field for a bases clearing double to cut the CSS lead down to 7-5.

The Saints would get one back in the fifth when Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) knocked an RBI triple to right center field to give the Saints a 8-5 lead, one they would hold until the end.

Michael Swenson (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) earned the win to remain undefeated at 3-0 this season allowing four hits and two earned runs.  Ben Grieger (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS) got the two-inning save striking out three and giving up zero hits.

Moody ended the game 2-4 with a home run and three RBIs and Casareto went 2-4 as well with a triple and two RBIs.

The offense in game two didn't start until the bottom of the second when CSS put up some runs.  With two runs already across in the inning, Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) knocked a two-run single to put the Saints up four after two.

The 'Jacks got one back in the top of the third but the Saints answered with two in the bottom half including another RBI from Olson.

The Saints got another run in the fourth but in the fifth the offense began to fire on all cylinders.  After Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) knocked in a run with a single, Flagstad, Moody and Casareto had back-to-back-to-back RBI triples to score three more.  Another run was added in the inning to give the Saints a 12-2 lead after five.

Northland would once again get a run in the top of the sixth but St. Scholastica continued to pour it on in the bottom half with seven more runs to go up 19-3 and the Saints held the 'Jacks in the seventh to earn the 16-run victory.

Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) got his second win in less than a week and is now 4-1 after allowing just two hits.

Casareto had another stellar game in the latter going 2-3 with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.  Flagstad has now tripled in four straight games and in five of the last six games.

The Saints (17-8, 9-0 UMAC) will be at home again this weekend when they host the Martin Luther Knights (1-15, 1-7 UMAC) on Friday and Saturday.  Friday's game will be at 6 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader will start at noon at Wade Stadium.  The action can be heard live on GameCentral at csssaints.com.
