MINNEAPOLIS – The St. Scholastica baseball team swept St. Olaf College in a doubleheader on Thursday at Mall of America Field, winning game one 3-1, and game two 6-2.

All of game one's scoring would take place in the third inning. The Saints were the home team in game one and the Oles got on the board first on an Andy Bartz two-out RBI single to make it 1-0. A pair of errors in the inning for the Saints made that run unearned.

In the bottom half, Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led off with a single. David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) followed with a groundball back to the pitcher and he would proceed to throw the ball into right center after trying to get Olson at second. Olson came all the way around to score on the play and Vogelgesang advanced to second.

The next batter, Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) ripped a RBI triple into right center and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1 St. Scholastica.

St. Olaf threatened in the fourth as with a runner on second and one out, the Oles got a single to  left and they tested the arm of Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), but a perfect throw by Peterson cut down the runner at the plate to keep it a 3-1 game.

The Oles stranded runners at second and third in the fifth and then had three hits in the sixth, but had nothing to show for it as CSS starter Jake Nystrom (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) recorded the key outs.

Thomas Rogers (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS ) closed the game for the Saints in the seventh, sitting down the Oles in order to record the save as the Saints came out on top 3-1.

The Oles out-hit CSS 10-5 in game one. Olson and Jensen each had two hits for the Saints. Nystrom went six innings and struck out four to earn his second win on the year.

In game two, after a scoreless first inning, the Saints put runners on the corners with no one out in the top of the second. Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) then roped a ball over the centerfielder's head with resulted in a two-run double to give CSS a 2-0 lead.

The Saints added two more runs in the top of the third as it was Jensen again hitting a RBI-triple to deep left field that allowed Vogelgesang to score. Also like the first game, Jensen scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0 St. Scholastica.

Moody recorded his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to right in the fifth as the Saints led 5-0. St. Olaf got things going in the bottom half against Saints starter Mickie Keuning (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Angelo State)) as the Oles plated two in the inning, one of which was unearned as the score was now 5-2.

Brian Houdek (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) took over for Keuning in the sixth and allowed two hits, but no Ole runner reached third base.

The Saints got some insurance in the top of the seventh on a Flagstad RBI single that scored Jensen to make it 6-2. Houdek then sat the Oles down in order in the seventh to make the final score 6-2.

Keuning earned his first collegiate win, striking out four, while not allowing a hit in five innings of work. Houdek earned his fourth save in his career. Flagstad was 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored to lead the CSS offense. Jensen scored three times and added a pair of hits. The Oles fall to 0-4 on the year with the two losses.

The Saints (3-5) will head down to Fort Pierce, Fla. for their annual spring trip on Saturday morning. CSS won't play until Monday when they face off against Rutgers University-Camden 10 a.m. Eastern Time and 9 a.m. local time in one, nine-inning game. It can be heard live on csssaints.com.
