PREVIEW: Baseball Looks to get Back on Track vs. St. Olaf Thursday

DULUTH, Minn. – After dropping five of its first six games of the season, the St. Scholastica baseball team will hope to get things going Thursday morning when it faces St. Olaf College for a doubleheader at Mall of America Field.

The Saints went 1-3 in St. Louis over the weekend. The lone victory was come-from-behind 14-13 triumph over 16th-ranked Buena Vista University in 10 innings on Saturday … The Saints fell to the Beavers on Sunday 7-2. They were swept by host, Washington University-St. Louis, falling in the first game 11-8 and in game two 7-5.

St. Scholastica Saints (1-5)
The Saints and Oles were scheduled to open the 2011 season at Mall of America Field, but those games were wiped out due to the roof collapse … The start of this season has been an uncommonly slow one for the Saints … It has been over a decade, in fact, since CSS started this slow and that was a 2-8 mark to begin the 1998 season … The Saints haven't had a 1-5 six-game stretch since April of 2003 … The Saints have committed 17 errors in the first six games for a .924 fielding percentage … CSS had a .968 fielding percentage a season ago … Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) has a team-leading six RBIs and Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) leads the team with .409 batting average … David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) has hit safely in six straight games and he with Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) and Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) have all reached base in each of the first six games … Opponents have totaled 17, 2-out RBIs, while the Saints have nine … CSS is batting .250 with runners in scoring position, while opponents are .324 … The Saints have stranded 62 base runners, compared to 40 for the opponents.

St. Olaf Oles (0-2)
The Oles opened their season against North Park University (Ill.) last Thursday night at Mall of America Field and dropped both games of a doubleheader 4-1, 4-2 … In game one North Park took an early four-run lead and in game two the Vikings scored three runs in the fifth for the win … The Oles are coming off a 21-18 season in 2011 and 9-11 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) placing sixth and failing to make the MIAC Tournament … St. Olaf lost first team all-region selection pitcher Ben Hughes after he was taken in the 10th round by the Colorado Rockies in the Major League Baseball Draft in June … Hughes won seven games on the mound for the Oles last season and was named the MIAC Pitcher of the Year … Sophomore Nick Kulla returns after being named first team All-MIAC as a freshman … Kulla batted .333 and had 20 RBIs last season … Anders Dzurak is the top returning arm for the Oles as he won four games last season in eight starts … Pitchers Jake Schmiesing and Brady Sand also saw a lot of action in 2011.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. St. Olaf: 6-4)
The Saints and Oles last met in 2010 in Northfield with CSS sweeping St. Olaf in a doubleheader 14-6 and 8-0. It was the first time the Saints swept the Oles in a season since 2004. Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) had five hits in the two games for the Saints.
