ST. LOUIS – The 13th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team fell to both 16th-ranked Buena Vista University (Iowa) and Washington University-St. Louis on Sunday to drop to 1-5 on the year.
CSS began the day against Buena Vista, who had just completed a game against Washington University. The Saints got on the board first on a
Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) RBI double in the top of the third, which scored
Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS). However, the Beavers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the inning. After a Jensen strikeout, two runners came in on a CSS error to give Buena Vista a 2-1 lead. The Beavers added another in the inning to make it 3-1.
After Buena Vista scored two more runs in the middle innings, the Saints plated their second run of the game in the top of the eighth on a
David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) RBI single.
Drew Dawson (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS ) came around to score on the play.
Unfortunately, the Saints would commit a couple of errors in the bottom of the eighth that allowed two more Beavers to score to make the final score 7-2. The Beavers improve to 2-4 with the victory.
In the second game of the day against Wash U, the Saints fell behind by a 6-2 mark and could not climb all the way back in ending in a 7-5 loss to the Bears.
The Saints scored first on a Jensen RBI single in the top of the first. The Bears responded in the bottom of the second with two runs in the inning, both of which were unearned.
The Saints tied it in the top of the third when the throw back to the pitcher sailed over his head and
Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) came in from third to score.
A two-out rally by Wash U in the bottom half of the inning gave the Bears a 3-2 lead after three innings. It was 6-2 Wash U in the top of the sixth until the Saints scored two in the inning on a
Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) RBI and a
Tyler Henderson (Chisago Lakes, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) sacrifice fly. After the Bears scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Saints got it back in the seventh on a
Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) RBI single to make it 7-5.
CSS threatened in the top of the eighth, putting two runners on, but the Bears made a couple of nice defensive plays to end the threat. The Saints got a runner on first with two outs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough in a 7-5 loss to Washington University.
Peterson was 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the CSS offense. The Bears improve to 5-3 with their fifth straight win.
The Saints will be back in action at Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome on Thursday morning when they face St. Olaf College in doubleheader. Action is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and can be seen live at csssaints.com.
