Offense, Pitching Help Saints Complete Weekend Sweep

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The CSS baseball team completed a weekend sweep of the Bethany Lutheran Vikings as they won 13-10 and 5-1 on Saturday afternoon in Mankato.

The sweep of the Vikings (7-13, 0-3 UMAC) now gives the Saints a seven-game winnings streak against Bethany.

Game one started with a lot of offense as 20 of the 23 runs were scored in the first 2.5 innings of the game.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) singled up the middle to score Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ).

The Vikings answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning with a bases loaded walk followed by a catcher's interference and a Saints defensive error to make it 3-1 after one.

The Saints continued the game's offense in the second.  With two runs already across in the inning Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) knocked in two runs with an RBI single to give the Saints a 5-3 lead.

Bethany once again answered in the bottom of the second with an offensive explosion.  After pushing two runs across Clint Aretz hit a grand slam to clear the loaded bases.  Another run would cross the plate and the inning ended with the Vikings up 10-5.

The offense wasn't done as the Saints pushed across five more runs in the third with the help of a two-RBI single from the bat of Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) to tie things up at 10.

Ben Grieger (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS) entered the game in relief to start the third inning and his pitching was key as he allowed just one hit and struck out three in three innings of work to put the Vikings in check.

The Saints managed to push across three runs in the fifth and sixth inning to take a 13-10 lead going down the stretch.

Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) finished off the game for the Saints allowing just two hits in the final two innings and striking out four to earn the save and hold the Saints lead for a 13-10 victory.  Grieger earned the win for the Saints marking his first of the season.

Juberian had an outstanding game one at the plate going 4-5 with four RBIs and Vogelgesang ended the game a perfect 4-4 with three RBIs of his own.

Game two was more of a defensive battle between the two teams but the Vikings still started early as they pushed across a run in the bottom of the first to go ahead 1-0.

The Saints would get the run back in the third when Jensen singled down the left field line to score Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) and tie the game up at one.

The Saints took the lead in the fifth when Flagstad hit his first home run of the season to put CSS up 2-1.

Juberian came through in the clutch for the Saints late in the game as he got three RBIs in the sixth and seventh inning to give CSS a 5-1 lead.

Jake Nystrom (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) finished his complete game by striking out Dylan Gass looking to end the game and finish the weekend sweep for the Saints with a 5-1 victory.

Nystrom had a nearly perfect game allowing only three hits and one run in seven innings of work and striking out eight to push his record to 3-2 this season.

Juberian ended the game 2-4 with three RBIs for a total of seven RBIs on the day and Flagstad went 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Juberian now has 13 runs batted in this year.

The Saints (11-8, 3-0 UMAC) will take the field on Tuesday as they travel to Ashland, Wis. for a mid-week matchup with the Northland LumberJacks  (4-10, 0-1 UMAC) at 3 p.m.
