James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) won in both singles and doubles play on Saturday, teaming up with fellow freshman
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) to win at No. 2 doubles and then coming out on top at No. 3 singles …
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and
Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) also picked up singles wins in the season opener.
Saint John's Johnnies (0-2, 0-0 MIAC)
The Johnnies began their season also last Saturday, falling to Division I's South Dakota State and Division II's St. Cloud State … Saint John's will have a conference match against Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday before playing the Saints … The Johnnies placed ninth last season in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) with a 2-7 conference mark and a 6-9 record overall … Six returning starters are back from last year's squad led by Fabricio Moncada, who is a two-time All-MIAC selection and is ranked fourth in the Central Region in the preseason by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) … Engelstad took Moncada to a super-breaker last year with Moncada coming out on top 17-15 … The other senior on the squad, Ian Hansen, went 9-8 in both singles and doubles competition last season.
