Men’s Basketball’s Six-Game Win Streak Snapped by Northwestern

Box Score ST. PAUL – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell behind in the first half and could not recover as it saw its six-game win streak come to an end with a 78-61 loss at Northwestern College on Friday night.

The Eagles made their first three field goals to jump out to an early six-point lead. CSS kept it close until Northwestern went on a 10-0 midway through the first half to extend its lead to 29-14. The margin got as high as 18 as the Eagles went into halftime with a 41-25 advantage.

The Saints shot 46-percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, while the Eagles shot 53-percent. CSS committed 10 first-half turnovers, compared to only two for Northwestern. The Eagles outscored the Saints 11-0 in points off turnovers.

The Saints made a run in the second half; however, that 11-0 run only got them within nine with seven minutes to go. Northwestern responded right away with a 7-0 and would go on to win 78-61.

The Saints shot 40-percent for the game and were 7-for-17 from beyond the arc. Northwestern shot 49-percent for the game and was 8-for-20 on 3-point attempts. The Saints were outscored in the paint 40-24 and the Eagles had a 15-4 edge in fastbreak points.

Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) paced the Saints with 14 points. Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had his sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Derek Steve (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) was also in double-figures with 11 points. Tom Gisler led five Eagles (11-9, 6-3 UMAC) in double-figures with 17 points.

The Saints (10-10, 7-2 UMAC) will face Crown College tomorrow at 5 p.m., following the women's game.
