The CSS men's hockey team couldn't find the offense on Saturday night in the NCHA Peters Cup semifinal matchup with UW-Stevens Point as the Pointers downed the Saints 5-1 at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The Pointers (14-10-4) seem to have the Saints number at Mars Lakeview Arena as this marks the fourth straight win for Stevens Point in Duluth.

Stevens Point started off the scoring early in the first period when the team's leading scorer Kyle Heck found the net just 2:52 into the game to make it 1-0 Pointers.

Jerry Freismuth continued the scoring for the Pointers at the 15:31 mark to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors entering the first intermission.

The Pointers kept pouring it on in the second as they scored another pair of goals in the period at the sticks of Jon Madden and Scott Henegar to extend the lead to four goals.  Stevens Point also held CSS scoreless in the period to go into the second intermission up 4-0.

Stevens Point didn't stop at four as Kent Detlefsen joined the mix scoring five minutes into the third period to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Saints would attempt a comeback at the 7:16 mark when Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored from Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) and Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) to make it 5-1 in favor of the Pointers.

The goal ended up being too little too late as the Saints couldn't score in the final 13 minutes and they fell to the Pointers 5-1.

Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) had a tough night in goal making 25 saves as his record falls to 12-8-5.

Marcoux's goal was his third of the season as he now has six total points.  Nowakowski's assist moves him to the 20-point club as he has 11 goals and nine assists.

Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) finishes the NCHA season as the team leader with 33 points on 17 goals and 16 assists.  Senior Jeremy Dawes (Winnipeg, Manitoba/College Jeanne Suave (Portage-MJHL) ) was second on the team with 27 points and a team high 17 assists.  Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) and Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) were third and fourth on the team with 26 and 25 points respectively.

The Saints end the year with a 15-8-5 record finishing second in the NCHA regular season in a year they were picked to finish dead last in the preseason polls.  There is a very slim chance the Saints will earn a Pool C bid to the Division III National Tournament pending the results of the games in the East region so stay tuned to csssaints.com to stay updated on all the latest men's hockey news.
