WINONA, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team edged Saints Mary's University 5-4 behind strong singles play at the Winona Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Cardinals (3-2) took two of the three doubles matches to take an early lead in the dual. The lone CSS doubles team to come out on top was the No. 3 team of
Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) and
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) by a score of 8-4.
However, in singles play, the Saints would drop only two matches and both were by third set super breakers at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 2,
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) came out on top again to improve to 4-0 in 2012 with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 triumph.
Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) won at No.4 singles by scores of 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) was also victorious is straight sets at the No. 5 spot 6-3, 6-0.
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) was the fifth winner for the Saints at No. 6 as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win.
The Saints (2-3) will be off until Friday, March 2nd when they head to southeastern Wisconsin and the Milwaukee area to face Concordia University (Wis.).
