DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team fell in three tightly contested singles matches and that was the difference in a 6-3 loss to Saint John's University on Sunday at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.

The Saints got off to a good start by taking two of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Jacob Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and Brian Lindberg (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) won 8-5, while the No. 3 tandem of Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) won 8-4.

In singles play, the lone winner for the Saints would be James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) at the No. 3 spot by scores of 6-0, 6-4. The Saints then lost in two super-breakers. The first to fall would be Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) at No. 6 as his comeback attempt came up short 6-3, 5-7, (10-6). Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) then lost at No. 5 singles by scores of 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, (10-8).

Engelstad faced Fabricio Moncada in the final match of the day at No. 1 singles. The Johnnies' Moncada is ranked fourth in Central Region, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Moncada took the first set 7-5, and Engelstad gave him everything he had in the second set, but came up short as Moncada prevailed in a tiebreaker 10-8.

The Saints (1-1) will be away from Duluth from now until mid-April starting next weekend when they face St. Cloud State on Friday night, Hamline University on Saturday and Saint Mary's University on Sunday.
