Box Score MENOMONIE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Stout broke open a 1-1 game in the first period by scoring four unanswered to win by a final of 5-2 over the St. Scholastica men's hockey team on Saturday afternoon.
Last night's hero for the Blue Devils Zach Vierling scored the first goal of today's contest with an even-strength goal less than five minutes into the game. CSS tied it up when
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) scored his second of the season on the power-play with nine minute to go in the opening period.
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) and his brother,
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)), had the assists.
Sam Carr put Stout back in front three minutes later and Vierling scored his second on the game on the power-play with over four minutes left to give the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.
The Blue Devils (6-3-2, 3-3-0 NCHA) extended their lead in the second period with a goal from Jason Cohen with 5:43 left in the period to make the score 4-1 after two.
Stout got another power-play goal at the start of the third period from Ricky Doriott to make it 5-1.
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) scored his sixth of the season 28 seconds later to make the final score 5-2.
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) were credited with the assists.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 28 saves in the loss for the Saints, while Nick Hopper had 35 saves to earn the win for the Blue Devils. The Saints outshot the Blue Devils for the second consecutive day by a 37-33 margin.
The Saints (3-7-0, 1-5-0 NCHA) will be back at Mars Lakeview Arena next weekend when hosts two-time defending NCAA Division III Champion St. Norbert College on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game will begin at 7 p.m. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
