Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team had four players score in double-figures and overcame a 10-point first half deficit to defeat Northland College 73-63 on Tuesday night at Kendrigan Gymnasium.
The LumberJacks had the advantage early leading for about 15 minutes of the first half and led by as many as 10 on three occasions. With the 'Jack lead at 10 with 6:43 remaining in the first half, the Saints went on a 15-1 run to take a four-point lead with a minute to go.
MarShaan Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis North HS (Minneapolis Comm. & Tech. College)) sparked the run with a dunk. Northland would get a bucket to make the halftime score 26-24 CSS.
St. Scholastica shot 36-percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes and was only 1-of-8 on 3-point attempts. Northland wasn't any better, shooting 32-percent from the field and also made just made one, 3-pointer in the half.
The Saints would not trail in the second half, but Northland kept it interesting. The LumberJacks got within one early, but 3-pointers by
Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) and
Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) was part of a 10-0 run to extend the margin to 11 with less than 14 minutes to go.
However, the 'Jacks would chip away and tie the game at 48-48 with 8:41 on the clock. However, the Saints quickly went back up by five and whenever Northland got it within a one possession the Saints had an answer as CSS prevailed 73-63.
The Saints controlled the interior in the second half, outscoring Northland 26-10 in the paint and 9-0 in second-chance points. CSS shot 52-percent in the second half, but were only 3-for-15 from the beyond the arc for the game. The LumberJacks shot 50-percent in the second half and were 18-of-22 from the free throw line for the game.
Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) led the Saints with 21 points, while Dahlman had 18.
Derek Steve (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) had 14 points, four assists and four steals. Johnson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. RJ Dean led four players in double-figures for Northland (3-16, 2-6) with 16 points.
The Saints (10-9, 7-1 UMAC) will travel to Northwestern College and Crown College this weekend to continue conference play. The Saints will begin with Northwestern on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., following the women's game.
