Tester Eclipses 1000 Points as Saints Dethrone Northwestern

| By:
Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – It was a special night for the St. Scholastica men's basketball team as Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) passed the 1000 point mark for his college career and the Saints went on to defeat the Northwestern College Eagles by a score of 71-51 Saturday afternoon in the Reif Gymnasium.

The Saints and Eagles were both 3-1 in conference play and the winner would move into second in the conference standings.

The game started with the Eagles soaring out to an 11-4 lead with 13:32 left in the half.  The Saints would eventually catch fire and overtake the Eagles just three minutes later by a basket from Tester to make the score 12-11.  The Saints never allowed the lead to shift ways and took a 23-17 lead into the break.

The second half was controlled by the Saints from start to finish.  Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) would return to his hot shooting from beyond the arc, scoring four 3-point baskets in a row during a 12-0 run by the Saints to extend the lead to 22.  The Eagles would never quit and got as close as 14 points, but a buzzer beating 3-pointer by David Walsh (Melbourne, Australia/St. Kevin’s HS (Vermilion CC)) capped a special night for the Saints as they went on to win 71-51.

For the Eagles (8-8, 3-2 UMAC), Wade Chitwood would have a team-high 18 points.  No other Eagles were in double figures.  The Eagles would shoot 30-percent from the field, 20-percent from beyond the arc, 86-percent from the charity stripe, collect 36 rebounds, and commit 16 turnovers.  The largest lead for the Eagles was seven.

The Saints were lead by Tester who had a team high 19 points.  Tester picked up his 1000th point midway through the second half with an off-balance jump shot in the middle of the lane over two Eagle defenders.  The game was stopped and Tester received a standing ovation from the numerous fans in the Reif.

Also scoring for the Saints was Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS), burying five 3-pointers for 15 total points.  Derek Steve (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) added 13 from the point guard position and MarShaan Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis North HS (Minneapolis Comm. & Tech. College)) had thunderous dunk to finish with six total points and team-high seven rebounds.

The Saints shot 52-percent from the field, 48-percent from beyond the arc, 67-percent from the charity stripe, garner 30 rebounds, and only commit one less turnover than Eagles, with 15.  The largest lead for the Saints was 22.

Up next for the Saints (7-9, 4-1 UMAC) is another UMAC conference matchup against Presentation College next Friday with tip time scheduled for 7 p.m. local time.  That game can be viewed on csssaints.com via Game Central.
