STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team skated out to a three-goal advantage in the second game of the series and survived a late rally by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to defeat the Pointers 4-3 Saturday night in front of a crowd of just over 500 spectators.
The Saints would get on the board first in the opening period with leading goal-scorer
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) scoring an even strength goal at 8:31 with the assist going to
Bobby Lipsett (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm Secondary (Salmon Arm-BCHL) ).
The Pointers would answer in the opening minutes of the second period by scoring on the power-play just 2:54 into the period. The Saints would score just 27 seconds later with Corcoran notching his second goal of the contest with the assist going to
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ). It would be an even strength goal.
The Saints would score again with two minutes to go in the period with an even strength goal by Lipsett and assists going to
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and
Cody Danychuk (Biggar, Saskatchewan/Biggar HS (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ). The Saints scored again with Williams tallying his own even strength goal two minutes into the third period. Assists on this goal went to Lipsett and
Garet Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS (Jersey-EJHL) ).
The Pointers rallied from this three-goal deficit scoring on the power-play less than six minutes to go and then again at even strength with less than four minutes left. The Pointers would be unsuccessful in the closing minute with the 6-on-4 advantage and the Saints hung on to win 4-3.
For the Pointers (8-8-3, 4-5-3 NCHA) they had 21 total shots and went 2-for-6 on the power play, committing three penalties, and Nick Graves would stop 13 shots while in net.
The Saints put 17 total shots on goal for the game, and were 0-for-2 on the power-play, committing seven penalties, and
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) stopped 18 shots while between the pipes.
The Saints (9-5-3, 4-3-3 NCHA) will host UW-River Falls next weekend for a two-game series at Mars Lakeview Arena with the opening face-off on Friday slated to start at 7:05 pm local time. Both of those games can be viewed live on csssaints.com via Game Central.
