DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball used the hot hand of
Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) who scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Saints in it's UMAC conference opener with a victory over Northland College Tuesday Night at Reif Gymnasium. With the win, the Saints are riding a three game win streak.
Northland jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game before the teams settled into their rhythms and eventually battle back and forth for the lead throughout the half before the Saints would close out on an 8-2 run to take a 40-32 lead into the break.
In the second half the Saints would fight off an early run by Northland and hold its largest lead of the game, 13 points, until Northland closed the margin to 69-62 with 5:42 remaining in the ball game. The Saints regained composure and went on quick 6-0 run to once again extend its lead to 13 again.
The LumberJacks would not go away and got as close as six points until the final minute of game-clinching free throws by the Saints. The Saints would win 84-78, extending its win streak to three games.
For the 'Jacks (1-10), four players would score in double figures as the team shot 50-percent from the field for the game. They would shoot 48-percent from beyond the arc, 85-percent from the charity stripe, and would have 15 total turnovers for the game.
For the Saints, Tester would lead all scorers with a career-high 30 points.
Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) added 22 points, shooting 6-for-11 from beyond the arc, and
Derek Steve (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) added 11 points as well.
The Saints would shoot 53-percent from the field, 44-percent from beyond the arc, and 75-percent from the charity stripe. The Saints would only commit nine turnovers.
The Saints (4-8), riding a three-game win streak, will be back in action this Friday as they travel to Bethany Lutheran for the second contest of UMAC conference play with tip time schedule for 7:30 p.m. local time.
