DULUTH, Minn. – After falling behind in the first inning at Wade Stadium, the St. Scholastica baseball team won going away with a 15-5 victory in seven innings over its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rivals from Northwestern College.
The Saints (30-5, 18-2 UMAC) matched the 30-win mark for the 12th straight season in downing Northwestern (13-20, 10-8) in the first of a three-game set with the Eagles.
Northwestern got on the board in the top of the first as Josh Markwith blasted a three-run home run, his first of two on the game, to give his team an early lead.
After going down in order in the bottom of the first, CSS rebounded with a seven-hit, six-run bottom to the second inning. The Saints got two on the board with four singles, but a two-out double by Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) gave the Saints the lead.
Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) followed that up with his first of three hits on the afternoon. He now has nine hits in his past ten at-bats.
After Markwith's second moon-shot of the night cut the lead to two, the Saints once again extended their lead in the fourth as a pair of doubles leading off the inning followed by yet another RBI hit for Flagstad put the Saints up 9-3.
Markwith came around to score his third run of the evening after a lead-off single in the top of the sixth, but Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) scored his third of four runs on the afternoon thanks to a wild pitch charged to the Eagles' pitcher.
After a quiet top of the seventh, the Saints saw six of their first seven batters reach base, including five walks which brought in three runs before the Eagles brought in a new pitcher. With the bases loaded, Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) drove a single to left field to finish the game with his second and third RBIs of the game, putting the Saints up by the ten-run final.
Moody and Flagstad had three RBIs each, but it was Marshik's four that led the Saints for the game. He and Flagstad also had three runs scored each.
David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) earned the victory for CSS, tossing six innings and keeping his team in the lead despite allowing ten baserunners. David Barningham (Bayfield, Wis./Washburn HS) relieved him in the seventh, allowing one hit in his lone inning of work.
The Saints and Eagles are back at it tomorrow with a doubleheader to close out the regular season schedule for St. Scholastica. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
