WHITEWATER, Wis. – The sixth-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team split with 10th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Tuesday at Prucha Field, dropping game one, 3-1, but taking game two, 2-1.

The Saints jumped from 10th to sixth in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)/D3baseball.com poll. The highest the Saints have ever been ranked in the poll is third back in the 2009 season.

In a quick first game, the Warhawks scored two runs in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Friend and a RBI single by Andrew Bauer.

The Saints got one those runs back in the top of the third on a run-scoring single by Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) to plate Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS). However, CSS would strand Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) at third base for three straight outs to end the inning.

The Saints also put the pressure on in the fourth with runners at second and third with one out. Unfortunately, Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) would be thrown out at home plate and the Saints would line out to end the inning.

Whitewater extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff home run from Friend to make it 3-1. The CSS offense could not get anything going from there, going down in order the final two innings to fall 3-2.

Matt Lewis (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) picked up his first loss of the season for the Saints. Five different Saints had hits in the game.

In the second game, the Warhawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a RBI single by Jared Fon. The score remained 1-0 until the sixth inning when Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) started the rally with a one out double. Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) followed with a single to score Link and tie the game.

After a pitching change by Whitewater, Scott Greening (Antigo, Wis./Antigo HS (Mesabi CC)) would line a ball off the pitcher's arm to force another pitching change. David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) then hit a two-out single through the right side scoring Moody and putting the Saints in front 2-1.

That is all Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) needed as he sat the Warhawks down in order in the sixth, but things got a little tense in the seventh. Whitewater was able to put runners at the corners with one out. Jensen hung tough and got a strikeout and a groundout to end the game. The victory is the first against Whitewater in program history.

Jensen scattered seven hits and struck out three in seven innings to get the win. Moody was 3-for-3 with a RBI and run scored and Greening was 2-for-3 in the game.

The Saints will be in action again tomorrow night, but this time in Duluth when they take on Northland College for one, nine-inning game at Wade Stadium. Due to the Duluth East and Duluth Central high school game at 4:30 p.m., the Saints and 'Jacks have moved back their start time to 7 p.m.

In addition, the University of Wisconsin-Superior game scheduled for Thursday has been canceled.
