MORRIS, Minn. – The St. Scholastica baseball team downed its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rivals from the University of Minnesota-Morris on Saturday in a 16-1 rout to complete a three-game sweep of the Cougars.
The Saints (26-4, 16-1 UMAC) continue to roll in conference action, dropping the Cougars to 8-15 on the season (7-6 UMAC).
CSS exploded for four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), his conference-leading sixth of the season.
St. Scholastica came back with seven more runs on just five hits in the third. Seven straight Saints reached with one out, but it was Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS )'s bases loaded triple that put CSS over the top.
Peterson got hit by a pitch in the fourth and eventually came around to score his third run of the game, but it was a two-run double by Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) that put the Saints up 14-0. CSS scored two more runs in the sixth and seventh inning.
Andy Davis (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS ) took to the mound to start for CSS, tossing four shutout innings while striking out five. He was relieved by Josh Retka (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS), who allowed one run in his two innings of work. Matt Mikel (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) closed out the game for CSS with one scoreless inning.
The Saints are on the road tomorrow afternoon to take on UMAC rival Bethany Lutheran College in a non-conference match-up. The previously scheduled match-up with Saint John's has been cancelled. Opening pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m in Mankato.
