MORRIS, Minn. – The St. Scholastica baseball team scored 21 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rival the University of Minnesota, Morris on Friday afternoon. CSS won game won 7-2 before exploding for a 14-0 victory in game two.
CSS (25-4, 15-1 UMAC) extended its 11-game winning streak with the pair of victories. Morris had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 8-14 on the season (7-5 UMAC).
Game one began with four shutout innings by Michael Swenson (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS), who struck out four in the outing. Dan Ubl (St. Paul Park, Minn./Park HS) relieved the victorious Swenson, allowing just one earned run and picking up three strikeouts of his own.
Offensively, the Saints were led by a three-RBI game by centerfielder Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS). Link drove in two in the fifth with a single that scored both Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) and Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS), one of two runs scored on the day for Peterson.
The Saints had just nine hits in the first game with Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) and Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) as the only two batters with more than one hit but they made them count when Morris fielders came up with two errors.Morris pitchers allowed just four earned runs in game one.
Game two saw the Saints offense come alive in support of Joel Wuorio (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) and Brian Houdek (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), who tossed a combined shutout, allowing just six hits and ten base runners while striking out four.
CSS scored six runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, capitalizing on five errors by the Cougars. Link once again led the Saints offense, scoring three runs while reaching base all four times with three hits and a walk.
CSS scored its six runs in the fourth inning beginning with a bases loaded, one-out walk by Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ). A Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) single began a string of three hits and a walk that put the Saints up 8-0 after four.
Four Cougar errors helped the Saints score six more runs in the fifth inning after CSS knocked just three base hits in the inning. David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS), Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), and Casareto each had two hits in the game and scored a run.
The Saints and Cougars return to the field tomorrow afternoon to conclude the series. Opening pitch is scheduled for Noon.
