DULUTH, Minn. – After falling into an early 7-0 rut, the St. Scholastica baseball team scored 12 unanswered runs to down Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rival Presentation College by a 12-7 final on Friday morning at Wade Stadium.
The PC Saints scored five runs in the first inning off of CSS Saints starter Jake Snyder (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS), dropping in bloop hits and seeing-eye singles as they rallied for an early lead. Snyder settled in his next two innings of work, but was relieved with a seven-run deficit by David Barningham (Bayfield, Wis./Washburn HS) in the fourth.
With six shutout innings, Barningham lowered his ERA for the season by over two runs and earned his third victory of the year as the offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth. He had six strikeouts on the afternoon
A lead-off single by Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) started the fourth for the Saints, but a near-400 foot blast by David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) to dead center field finally got the Saints on the board just two pitches later. A walk and a hit followed by a triple by Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) brought the Saints within three with a four-run inning.
Pitcher Matt Kervin was effectively wild for Presentation through the first five innings, but the Saints bats came alive again when Greg Bares entered in the sixth. Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) led off with a double, and a pair of singles by Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) and Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) followed, before Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) knocked a home run to left to put the Saints in front.
CSS went on to score two more runs in the inning, highlighted by a Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) RBI-triple. Casareto came in to score on a Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) double, one of three hits on the afternoon for Peterson.
Three straight singles and a pair of steals by Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) and Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) gave the Saints two more runs in the seventh inning to extend their lead to five runs, which remained as Barningham did not allow a base runner during the final three innings for CSS.
The Saints will be at home again on Monday when they host regional rival University of St. Thomas at 1 p.m. at Wade Stadium.
