MINNETONKA, Minn. – The St. Scholastica baseball team made a clean sweep in a triple header against Crown College on Saturday, defeating the Storm by a combined score of 48-5.
The Saints took game one 15-2. David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) earned the victory on the mound, pitching three innings of one-hit ball before being relieved by a trio of pitchers.
Offensively, four Saints had two hits each, led by Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) who had his second four-RBI game of the season.
Scott Greening (Antigo, Wis./Antigo HS (Mesabi CC)) and Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) each added two RBIs as well. The Saints scored their runs in the first, fifth, and sixth innings as they rolled past the Storm in seven innings.
Game two saw five Saints take the mound with David Barningham (Bayfield, Wis./Washburn HS) started and earning a victory with two innings pitched, allowing just one earned run. Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had four strikeouts in two innings of work.
Kyle Flagstad (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) went three-for-three in game two with two runs batted in. Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS), the designated hitter for the game, had two hits and two RBIs. Andy Schwantes (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and Vogelgesang both also had two hits and two runs batted in. CSS won by a 14-3 final.
CSS pitched a two-hit shutout in game three. Matt Lewis (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) earned the win with three innings of work, followed by Jake Snyder (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS). Tyler Olin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), Matt Mikel (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS), and Jake Nystrom (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) closed out the final two and a third innings without allowing a hit. Lewis finished with five strikeouts on the day.
Designated hitter Griffin Bell (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc HS) batted in five runs and scored after each of his three hits in the game. Vogelgesang added three more RBIs and scored a run after relieving Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS), who went two-for-three with three runs scored in the game as CSS shutout the Storm 19-0.
CSS moves to 12-3 on the season with three victories on the afternoon. Crown falls to 0-7.
Weather permitting, the Saints return to the field next Friday night with a single game against Bethany Lutheran College, followed by a double header on Saturday. Opening pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6 p.m.
