Baseball Completes Sweep of Knights

NEW ULM, Minn. – With two wins in a doubleheader with Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rival Martin Luther College, the St. Scholastica Saints completed a weekend sweep of the Knights, winning game one by an 8-0 final and game two by a score of 12-1.

The Saints improve their record to 19-4 on the year (10-1 UMAC) while the Knights fall to 2-14 on the year (2-7 UMAC).

Game one saw three Saints take the mound, allowing just five hits and striking out eight. #David Vogelgesang# earned the victory with three innings of work, but #Brian Houdek# closed out the game with a three-inning save, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

CSS had just nine hits in game one but took five walks in earning eight runs against Martin Luther pitcher Joel Hering. CSS scored in four of seven innings in the game.

#Kyle Jensen# was the lone Saint with two hits in game one, including at triple, and two RBIs. #Brandon Porten# scored two runs and had a double on the afternoon. #Scott Greening# reached base three times with two walks and a double.

In game two, the Saints nursed a first inning run until the sixth, when the offense exploded for five runs. #Kyle Flagstad# singled to lead off the game for CSS and eventually came around to score on a #Joe Link# groundout.

The Saints had a hit in every inning, but did not score again until Flagstad led off the sixth with a walk. Flagstad stole second for the second time and then came around to score, along with Link, on a two-run single by #Kyle Moody#.

#Tyler Henderson# had a two-RBI single later in the sixth and came back with another in the the Saints' six-run seventh inning. Flagstad also had a two-RBI double in the seventh.

#Matt Lewis# pitched five innings for CSS, allowing just four hits and striking out four to earn the victory. #Jake Nystrom# closed out the final inning, striking out two in one hitless inning of work.

The Saints return to action on Friday when they face off with another UMAC rival in Presentation College. Weather permitting, it should be the Saint's home opener with a single game beginning at 6 p.m.
