Men’s Tennis Rolls through UMAC Opponents

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team shut out both Martin Luther College and Bethany Lutheran College by 9-0 scores on Saturday.

The Saints began the day by defeating Martin Luther College 9-0 in the Burns Wellness Commons Fieldhouse. The Knights fell to a record of 2-5 (2-3 UMAC) with the loss.

At No. 1 doubles, #Jacob Engelstad# and #Brendan Anderson# won 8-2. The No. 2 team of #Cullen Combs# and #Tucker Combs# won 8-1 and the No. 3 team of #Kevin Hilpert# and #Dylan Kelly# blanked their opponents 8-0.

In singles play, Jacob Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) at No. 1 and #Erik Conley# at No. 6 both won by shutout 6-0, 6-0. #Alex Nagle# at No. 3 and #Kolin Dean# at No. 4 each won by 6-0, 6-1 scores. #Brian Lindberg# won at the No. 2 spot 6-2, 7-6 (9-7). #Nick Lambrecht# was the last winner against the Knights, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Later in the day, the Saints took care of Bethany Lutheran College by the exact same 9-0 score. The Vikings fall to a record of 2-5 (2-4 UMAC).

In doubles action, the No. 1 tandem of Brendan Anderson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) and Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) won 8-1. Erik Conley (Duluth, Minn./Mooresville HS (N.C.)) and Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) at No. 2 doubles won 8-0. The No. 3 team of #Mike Aro# and Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) won 8-2.

CSS had little trouble in singles play as Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) at No. 2, Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) at No. 3, and Alex Nagle (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) at No. 4 all won by shutout. For Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) it was his first collegiate singles victory.

Cullen's brother, Tucker Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), won at the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-2. At No. 5, #Nick Lind# cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph as did #Tom Schneuer# at No. 6 by scores of 6-0, 6-2.

The Saints improve their record to 10-9 (7-0 UMAC). CSS has won 92 straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) dual matches.

The Saints will play the University of Minnesota-Morris in two matches tomorrow. The first match will begin at 11 a.m. in the Burns Wellness Commons Fieldhouse.
