Baseball Brings the Lumber against the ’Jacks

ASHLAND, Wis. – The 11th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team hit six home runs with three coming from #Brandon Peterson# as the Saints swept Northland College on Tuesday in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) doubleheader at LumberJack Field, taking game one, 22-0, and game two, 11-5.

In game one, the Saints scored at least one run in six of the seven innings and scored at least three runs in five innings on their way to a dominating 22-0 win . Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) tied a Saints single-game record with three home runs in the game.

#Brian Marshik# and #David Vogelgesang# had back-to-back doubles to begin the game with Vogelgesang's shot bringing in Marshik. Two batters later, Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) hit his first home run of the game to make it 3-0 after one inning.

After a scoreless second inning, #Joe Link# had a RBI-double in the third inning and later came around to score. #Andy Schwantes# and #Andy Manos# also had RBIs in the inning to make it 7-0.

CSS plated seven runs in the fourth as Link and Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) each had two-run home runs in the inning. It was Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) again in the fifth inning with his third home run in as many innings. The three home runs match a single-game St. Scholastica record. Marc Dugas in 1996 against Mount Senario and Daryl Fuchihara against Northwestern in 2005 also accomplished the feat.

#Scott Greening# hit the Saints' fifth home run of game one with a three-run blast in the top of the seventh. The Saints last hit five home runs in a game in 2005 against Northwestern College.

#Jake Snyder# allowed just three hits and struck out three in four innings to improve to 3-0 this season. #Tyler Olin# pitched the final three innings and did not allow a hit, while striking out three to earn his second collegiate save.

In the nightcap, the Saints scored 11 runs in the first two innings and then cruised the rest of the way to an 11-5 victory. #David Vogelgesang# hit the Saints' lone home run in game two, a two-run blast.

CSS scored 10 of its 11 runs in the second inning. #Kyle Flagstad# had a bases-clearing double to score three. Flagstad had four RBIs in the inning. #Jake Casareto# and Andy Manos (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS ) also had RBI-doubles in the inning.

The LumberJacks scored three runs in the third and two more in the fifth for their scoring. #Michael Swenson# went five innings to earn the victory on the mound. #Ben Grieger# pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

The Saints moved up one spot in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)/D3baseball.com top 25 poll for the fifth straight and are now sit 11th. The two wins improve the Saints' record to 16-4 (7-1 UMAC). The LumberJacks fall to 3-13 (1-7 UMAC).

The Saints will have a busy weekend ahead of them with a three-game series starting on Friday at Martin Luther College. Following the conclusion of the series on Saturday, CSS will play both 16th-ranked St. Olaf College and Carleton College on Sunday. Friday's game against Martin Luther will begin at 3 p.m.
