PREVIEW: Tennis Teams on the Road Again this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. – With changes to this weekend's schedule, the St. Scholastica women's tennis team will be at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday, while both the men's and women's teams will be at Martin Luther College on Saturday.

Friday's men's match at Eau Claire has been postponed to April 21st, while the Sunday match-up for both teams against the University of Minnesota-Morris has been postponed and will be played as a doubleheader when the Cougars travel to Duluth on April 17th.

St. Scholastica Saints (5-9, 2-0 UMAC)
The Saints began UMAC play last weekend and cruised in both of their matches to extend the conference dual match win streak to 87 … CSS has won its last three matches by shut out and have won 34 of its last 36 individual matches … #Kevin Hilpert# is currently on a five-match singles winning streak, while #Jacob Engelstad# has won his last four matches … The doubles team of #Brendan Anderson# and Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) have won four straight matches and are 9-3 on the year … Anderson is currently tied for fourth all-time in program history with 44 career doubles victories.

Martin Luther Knights (0-2, 0-0 UMAC)
The Knights are 0-2 on the season with a pair of 9-0 losses to Minnesota State-Mankato and Macalester … Martin Luther is picked to finish third in the conference this season, according to the preseason coaches poll … The Knights return five of their six most experienced singles players from the 2010 season and hopes to build on a 7-6 record and third place finish in the UMAC … Scott Henrich received All-UMAC honors as a freshman last season, finishing with a singles record of 8-6 overall, and a 6-4 record in conference play in the No. 1 spot … Paul Koester also returns for his second season after finishing with a 6-9 singles record a year ago, mostly in the number three spot, and will likely replace departed Dave Zuberbier in the No. 2 singles position … Ryan Obry and Phil Hunter bring more experience to Martin Luther's roster, as both finished with at least six singles wins a year ago in the back half of the line-up.

St. Scholastica Saints (11-4, 2-0 UMAC)
The Saints have reached 11 wins before five losses for the first time since the 2004 season … Six of the last seven dual match victories have come by more than a two-match differential, while all four losses have come by two matches or less … Friday's match at UW-Eau Claire will be the final non-conference contest of the season … Freshman #Hillary Bungarden# still has not lost a singles dual match yet with a perfect 13-0 record … Another freshman, #Amanda Hiatt# is second on the team with 10 singles dual wins … Senior #Danni Sonnenfeld# needs just one more singles victory to crack the top five for career singles wins as she currently sits with 45 … Senior #Callee Conda# is right behind her with 41 career singles wins, which is currently tied for eighth … Sonnenfeld has 76 combined career doubles and singles victories with is tied for ninth on the program list.

UW-Eau Claire Blugolds (10-5, 4-2 WIAC)
The Blugolds' traditional season takes place in the fall and they finished third out of seven teams at the WIAC Championships … UWEC went 4-2 in conference play and qualified for the WIAC Automatic Qualifier Tournament at the end of April … The Blugolds started their spring season over spring break last week and 4-1 in Hilton Head, S.C. … Megan Born, Eau Claire's top singles player has 11 wins on the year and has won six straight, including winning the No. 1 flight at the WIAC Championships in the fall … Emily Heibl and Stephanie Wolf have won five straight doubles matches, all at the No. 3 spot.

The Saints and Blugolds last met in Eau Claire in the fall of 2008 with UWEC coming out on top 5-4. Callee Conda (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (UW-Green Bay)) won in both singles and doubles.

Martin Luther Knights (0-2, 0-0 UMAC)

Just like their male counterparts, the Knights have started the season 0-2 with a pair of 9-0 losses to Minnesota State-Mankato and Macalester … Martin Luther is picked to finish third in the UMAC and did receive one first place vote … The Knights return every member from last season's roster that finished third in the UMAC … Rachel Niemi returns for her third year as the top singles player for the Knights … She finished last season with a 5-10 record, and was named All-UMAC for the second time … Niemi was joined on the all-conference team by Karina Luthra, who received those honors in her first year playing mainly in the number two and three spots … Senior Carol Niemi also returns to round out the top three after a 6-7 individual record last season … The Knights also have a veteran group to support their top three, with Tessa Hieb and Meredith Koltz entering their fourth seasons, while juniors Heidi Heckmann, Hannah Janke, Lauren Gross and Michelle Hintz also returning after gaining significant experience.
