PREVIEW: Baseball Finally to Get Back on the Field and Begin UMAC Play on Saturday

DULUTH, Minn. – The 12th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team will begin Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play with a tripleheader at Crown College this weekend. Due to field conditions and availability all three games will be played on Saturday at Minnetonka High School.

St. Scholastica Saints (9-3, 0-0 UMAC)
The Saints have opened up their 2011 season strong winning seven of their first eight games and an impressive 7-1 mark while on their annual spring break trip to Florida … The Saints outscored their opponents 62-24 while on the trip … Their lone loss came by a score of 3-2 to Gettysburg College … CSS has not played since falling in walk-off fashion to Division I Illinois-Chicago on March 20th … After having three games wiped out last weekend, the Saints had another game against St. Thomas on Thursday postponed ... The Saints did pick up a game at Saint John's on May 1st ... All three of CSS's losses this year have come by one run differences and the Saints had the lead in two of those three losses … #Kyle Moody# and #Joe Link# are both batting over .457 on the year … Both players have over 10 RBIs so far this year as well. #Jake Snyder#, #Matt Lewis# and #David Vogelgesang# are all 2-0 to start the year on the mound … As a team the Saints pitching corps has an earned run average of 2.70, while their opponents have an ERA of 6.55 … # Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS)# is a perfect 16-16 on stolen base attempts this year.

Crown Storm (0-4, 0-0 UMAC)

The Storm have opened up with doubleheaders in Iowa and Illinois and came away with losses in all four games … Crown has been outscored 32-10 in those four games … Steve Boger is the offensive leader for the Storm with a .429 batting average … Isaiah Jensen has a .364 batting average along with four RBIs for the team lead in that category … Pitching is where Crown struggles … The Storm has an ERA of 8.25, while their opponents have an ERA of 3.21 … The Storm was picked to finish eighth in the league, according to the preseason coaches poll.

The Saints threw a combined no-hitter in game one of the final regular season doubleheader at Wade Stadium last year. Matt Lewis (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), #David Barningham#, #Kyle Jensen#, and #Jake Nystrom# all combined for the no-no.
