Hilpert Leads Men’s Tennis in Wednesday Split

ORLANDO, Fla. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team played a solid University of Wisconsin-La Crosse squad close, losing 5-4 and then defeated Schreiner University (Texas) 7-2 on Wednesday.

The Saints (2-9) opened the day falling 5-4 to UW-La Crosse. The Eagles (12-4) are ranked 16th in Central Region, according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.

The lone doubles team to win was the No. 3 team of #Kevin Hilpert# and #Brendan Anderson#, whom won by an 8-2 score.

At No. 1 singles, #Jacob Engelstad# took down the Eagles' Nick Piotrowski in a super-breaker 6-3, 0-6, (10-8). Piotrowski is ranked 21st in the region in singles. Brendan Anderson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) also won in a super-breaker at the No. 5 spot 3-6, 6-2, (10-8). Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) was the final winner against the Eagles coming out on top 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 6 position.

In the nightcap, the Saints defeated Schreiner 7-2. St. Scholastica won all three doubles matches with the No. 1 team of Jacob Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and #Dylan Kelly# winning 8-3. The No. 2 team of Brendan Anderson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) and Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) won 9-7. The Combs Brothers, #Tucker Combs# and #Cullen Combs#, won at the No. 3 spot 8-3.

Engelstad won his second No. 1 singles match on the day 6-4, 6-3. Kelly also won at the No. 3 position 6-3, 6-3. Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) finished 4-0 on the day with two singles and two doubles wins with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 5 singles. At No. 6, #Kolin Dean# was the final winner by scores of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

The Saints have time to enjoy Florida tomorrow with no matches and will play their final dual match in the Sunshine State on Friday when they take on Principia College (Ill.) at 11:30 a.m. local time.
