FT. PIERCE, Fla. – The 13th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team won two more games on Monday, defeating Rutgers University-Camden (N.J.) 12-8 and the College of Mount St. Vincent (N.Y.) 9-3.
The Saints (6-1) began the day by avenging last year's loss in Florida to Rutgers-Camden, by defeating the Raptors 12-8.
CSS got a break in the top of the second when #Kyle Moody# scored all the way from first on an error. It remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when a CSS error prolonged the inning and the Raptors (4-5) were able to plate four runs to take a 4-1 lead.
The lead didn't last long as the Saints scored five in the top of the fifth. Two runs were able to score on another Camden error, while Moody, #Scott Greening# and #Brandon Peterson# had RBIs in the inning.
After the Raptors pushed another run across on squeeze play in the bottom of the fifth, the Saints gave themselves some breathing room in the seventh by scoring six runs in the inning. #Brian Marshik# had a two-run single and #Joe Link# had a RBI-double in an inning where another Camden error came back to bite them.
The Raptors did not go away, scoring two in the bottom of the seventh to make it 12-7 and then loading the bases with no outs in the eighth. However, #Jake Nystrom# came in and closed the door, allowing a run to the first batter he faced, but then getting a strikeout and double-play to get out of the eighth and then sitting down the Raptors in order in the ninth to make the final 12-8.
#Matt Lewis# earned his second win of the season, striking out five in seven innings and allowing just two earned runs. Nystrom earns his second save on the year.
Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) continues to swing a hot stick, going 3-for-5 in the game.
In the second game, the Saints jumped out to a 5-0 lead after 3.5 innings and went on to win 9-3 over Mount St. Vincent (N.Y.).
CSS scored four runs in the second with a two-run double by
Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) and RBIs by #Tyler Henderson# and
Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS).
After a RBI-single in the top of the fourth by #Griffin Bell#, the Dolphins (3-5) got their first hit in the bottom frame and eventually scored two to cut the margin to 5-2.
Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) followed with a two-out, two-RBI double in the sixth as part of a three-run inning to extend the lead to 8-2. Both teams added one run later in the game to make the final 9-3.
#David Barningham# pitched 4.1 innings in relief to earn the win. #Josh Retka# started for the Saints and allowed just one hit in 3.2 innings.
Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead St. Scholastica offensively.
The Saints will have a day off tomorrow and will get back to action on Wednesday for one, nine-inning game against Salve Regina University (R.I.). The first pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. local time.
