Solid Pitching and Defense Leads Saints Sweep to Open Florida Trip

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The 13th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team swept Muhlenberg College (Pa.) this morning at the former spring training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning game one, 10-3 and game two, 6-2.

In game one, the Saints (4-1) did not walk a single batter and committed just one error in the 10-3 victory. It was the third time in the first four games, the Saints put a 10-spot on the board.

CSS scored three runs in the top of the second with #Brandon Peterson# and #Andy Manos# having RBIs in the inning. A #Jake Casareto# sacrifice fly in the fourth inning made it 4-0 St. Scholastica.

After the Mules (2-11-1) scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Saints answered with three runs on five hits in the top of the fifth. #Scott Greening# had a RBI on a ground-rule double. #Tom Juberian# had a RBI-single and #Kyle Moody# had a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2. The Saints added three more runs in the seventh to make the final 10-3.

#David Vogelgesang# improved to 2-0 on the year, scattering seven hits in six innings and allowing just one earned run. Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) was 3-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored, while Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) added two RBIs and Scott Greening (Antigo, Wis./Antigo HS (Mesabi CC)) scored three runs.

#Jake Snyder# shut down the Mules in game two, going the distance in the 6-2 victory. Snyder's only runs were allowed in the seventh when the game was pretty much in doubt. It was Snyder's second collegiate win and his first complete game.

The Saints scored one run in four of the first five innings and then added insurance on a Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-0.

Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) went 3-for-4 at the plate to pace the CSS offense. #Joe Link# and #Brian Marshik# each scored two runs.

Today's games were the first two between the two programs.

The Saints will play a pair of nine-inning game tomorrow in their regular home of Ft. Pierce, Fla. The Saints will open with Rutgers University-Camden (N.J.) at 7:45 a.m. local time and then will face the College of Mount St. Vincent (N.Y.) at 11:30 a.m. local time.
