DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team beat conference rival Crown College on Saturday afternoon at Rief Gymnasium by a final score of 74-66.
Within the first 20 minutes there were five lead changes, and three tied scores. Midway through the first half the Saints (9-12, 6-4 UMAC) went on an 8-0 run to take a 27-19 lead, however Crown (3-16, 3-7 UMAC) immediately responded with an 8-0 run of themselves to tie the game at 27-27.The with 3:39 remaining in the first half, #Danny Schmitz# became the ninth Saint to score 1,000 career points following his missed 3-point attempt and getting laying it in. The game would be deadlocked at 33 apiece at the half.
The Storm's RJ Walker was the game's leading scorer at halftime with 10 points. CSS shot 44-percent from the field in the first half, while Crown was 48-percent.
The Saints went on a 17-8 run to start the second half. The Saints would remain in control of the game until 6:06 remaining in the game when Crown went on a 10-0 run to take a one point lead. Crown would later tie the score 59-59 with a little over three minutes remaining, but then the Saints'
Danny Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) sank a 3-pointer to give the Saints a three-point lead and then #Derek Anderson# would join in on the fun by sinking two straight three-pointers en route to a 12-0 run. Crown College wouldn't be able to recover, losing by a score of 74-66.
The Saints shot 49-percent from the field for game, while Crown College was 45-percent. Both Crown and CSS shot 8-21 from behind the arc.
Derek Anderson (Cook, Minn./Cook HS) was the game's leading scorer with 16 points, while
Danny Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS), #Brett Tester# and #Jonah Dahlman# each scored over double-digits tonight. Schmitz also had seven assists and six rebounds. RJ Walker and David Glover led Crown College with 15 points each.
The Saints battled in the paint for 36 points, while Crown College managed to get 26. The Storm did manage to steal 27 points of turnovers, while CSS got 13.
The Saints will be on the road for the final time during the regular season next weekend when they head to face Martin Luther College on Friday night and Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday. Friday's game against the Knights is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
