DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's and women's tennis teams will hit the road and face St. Olaf College on Saturday in Owatonna and the University of St. Thomas on Sunday in their final matches before spring break.

The Oles are off to a 0-3 start with losses to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, St. Cloud State, and Gustavus Adolphus … Both Gustavus and UW-Eau Claire are preseason ranked in the region … The Oles have won just three singles matches and one doubles match entering the weekend … St. Olaf will play Saint Mary's, a team the Saints lost to 5-4 at the beginning of the year, on Friday … Junior Knute Gunderson was an All-MIAC selection in doubles last season and has been part of the lone doubles this year … Gunderson also has one win at No. 1 singles.

The Tommies are off to a great start this season with wins over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, St. Cloud State, and Saint Mary's … The Tommies were scheduled to play Saint John's on Sunday, but poor travel conditions canceled that match … St. Thomas has not lost a doubles match this season, with a perfect 9-0 record … The Tommies are 13-5 in singles play … The Tommies will play Carleton College on Saturday, who is ranked eighth in the central region … St. Thomas finished third in the MIAC last season and was eliminated in the first of the MIAC Tournament … UST returns six of its top eight players from 2010 … Seniors include Andy Michels, a two-time All-MIAC doubles honoree, who went 12-3 in doubles and 6-9 in singles last spring … Freshman Brendan O'Connell made All-MIAC in both singles and doubles in 2010 … O'Connell went 12-3 in singles, including an 8-1 record in MIAC play … He also went 10-4 in doubles. … Junior Dan Cooper made All-MIAC in doubles after he went 7-5 in doubles and 8-6 in singles last spring.

The Saints suffered their first setback of 2011 with a 5-4 loss to the College of Saint Benedict at the Arrowhead Tennis Center on Sunday. The Saints were swept in all three doubles matches, but took four of the six singles matches to make it interesting.

The Saints had been winning the close matches, with two 5-4 dual match victories, prior to their loss to St. Ben's on Sunday … The Saints are 19-11 in singles matches and 10-5 in dual matches … CSS had more losses in doubles on Sunday than they had in the previous four matches combined … Senior #Danni Sonnenfeld# and freshmen #Hillary Bungarden# and #Amanda Hiatt# are a combined 13-0 in dual singles matches so far this season … Sonnenfeld has won 14 of her last 17 matches … The Saints are 12-3 overall at the No. 4, 5, and 6 singles spots.
St. Olaf Oles (1-1, 1-0 MIAC)
The Oles are 1-1 on the young season with a win over St. Catherine University and a close loss to Winona State … The Oles are 5-1 in doubles play in their first two matches and 8-4 in singles matches … Julia Ellis and Christina Muller are both 2-0 in singles competition … Muller was an all-conference selection in both singles and doubles a year ago … Senior Abigail Ho and junior Caitlin Harper were also all-MIAC choices in 2010 … St. Olaf finished third in the MIAC last season and advanced all the way to the MIAC Tournament final before falling to Gustavus Adolphus … The Oles will play Saint Mary's on Friday night.
