SUPERIOR, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team battled from behind but could not overcome its bridge rivals from the University of Wis.-Superior, falling by a 5-2 final and seeing the season come to a close in the quarterfinals of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Peters Cup tournament.

The Saints (9-17-1) finish their season on a somber note while the Yellowjackets (15-11-1) survive to play in the next round of the tournament.

UWS scored the lone goal of the first period as Pat Dalbec netted his first of two on the evening, assisted by Brad Phenow and Josh Kesler.

CSS battled back in the second, out-shooting Superior 14-7 in the period, with #Joel Langevin# netting his second goal in as many nights to tie the score. It was an unassisted tally.

The Yellowjackets went on the powerplay late in the second and re-took the lead, with Talon Berlando scoring assisted by Jeff Forsythe.

Just over four minutes into the third, UWS extended its lead to two goals with an unassisted score of its own, with Joey Massingham performing the honors.

Just over a minute later, #Jeremy Dawes# brought the Saints back within one with a score assisted by line mates #Riley Riddell# and #Tyler Miller#.

Not long after, Kyle Leahy scored to put the Yellowjackets back up by two. An empty-net goal by Dalbec put the final score at 5-2 and secured victory for UWS.

#Patrick Sullivan# took the loss in net for CSS, stopping 14 shots, before being relieved for the game's final 15 minutes by #Brennan Poderzay#. Drew Strandberg earned his second victory in as many nights, stopping 26 of 28 shots by the Saints.

Both teams finished with seven penalties for 25 minutes. CSS went scoreless in three powerplay opportunities with the Yellowjackets scoring once in three opportunities of their own.

The Saints season comes to a close in the NCHA Peters Cup tournament after an up-and-down year. CSS says goodbye to two seniors – Riley Riddell (Wawota, Saskatchewan/Wawota Parkland (UW-River Falls) ) and #Neil Sauter#. Riddell led the Saints with a team-high 19 assists on the season. In returning for his senior season, Sauter finished with nine points while proving to still be a powerful presence on defense.  Stay current with the Saints men's hockey throughout the offseason by continuing to follow csssaints.com for future updates.
