PREVIEW: Tennis Teams to Travel to Moorhead on Sunday

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's and women's tennis teams will both face Concordia College-Moorhead on Sunday.

Last Action:
The Saints opened the 2011 season last weekend with a pair of loss against MIAC schools Saint Mary's and Saint John's Universities. Both matches could have gone either way with the Saints losing a tight match to the Cardinals 5-4 on Saturday night. The Saints then fell 7-2 to the Johnnies on Sunday, but the Saints lost five matches that were decided by tiebreakers. #Kevin Hilpert# won three matches last weekend (two doubles, one singles) to lead the Saints.

Head coach #Wells Patten# is really excited about his men's squad for the 2011 season … Coach Patten has quality experience coming back, paired with some talented newcomers … Coach Patten believes this is the best men's group that he has had in recent years at CSS … Leading the returnees is junior #Jacob Engelstad#, who set a program record last season with 18 singles victories in a season … Senior #Brendan Anderson# also returns … Anderson, a quality doubles player, has been named to the All-UMAC team the past two seasons … Another senior, #Tucker Combs#, will be teaming with his younger brother, freshman Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), in doubles this season … Last season, Tucker teamed with Engelstad and recorded the fourth-most wins in a season in program history (13) … Other players back this season to watch for are juniors #Brian Lindberg# and Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) … Both have been named to the ALL-UMAC in their first two seasons … In addition to the returnees, Coach Patten has brought in a talented recruiting class … #Dylan Kelly# and #Erik Conley# are just some of the names to watch … Kelly was an All-City selection in the Twin Cities and Conley, who played in high school tennis in North Carolina, was a three-time regional qualifier.

Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers (2010 Record: 7-10, 3-6 MIAC)

The Cobbers enter the 2011 season under head coach Troy Hanestad, who is entering his fifth season … Concordia will be led by senior Matt Edin, who has been named to the All-MIAC singles team in each of his first three seasons … Edin went 10-6 last year at the No. 1 singles position … His 10 win at the No. 1 spot were tied for the third-most by a MIAC player … Devin Larsen led the team as a freshman last season with 12 singles wins and tied for a team-high nine doubles victories.

The Saints lost at home to the Cobbers at home during the 2009 season 5-4. Jacob Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) earned singles victories that day.

Last Action:
The Saints got off to a great start to their season last Sunday defeating both Saint Mary's and Bemidji State. The Saints began the with a 6-3 victory over the Cardinals in the morning and then defeated the Beavers 5-4 in the afternoon. #Danni Sonnenfeld# went 4-0 on the day with a pair of singles and doubles victories.

The Saints are looking to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years this season, after snapping a three-year streak last season … Head Coach #Wells Patten# brings back just two seniors on this year's squad after losing numerous seniors the past two seasons … #Callee Conda# is one of those seniors and she looks to lead the Saints this season … Conda has been an All-UMAC selection the past two seasons for CSS after from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay after her freshman season … Two seasons ago, Conda finished with 19 singles victories, which were the fifth-most in program history … The other senior is Danni Sonnenfeld (Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) … Sonnenfeld was an All-UMAC choice in 2010 and is currently 10th on the program's list in career singles wins (35) … Coach Patten also has just two juniors in #Ali Bernst# and #Liz Coyne# … Both will look to see more court time this season … The sophomore class consists of Peru native #Milly Che Leon#, #Jill Kammerer#, and #Megan Lawrence# … Also part of that class is freshman #Kelli Johnson#, who had to take a medical redshirt last season … The coaches have been impressed with Johnson in preseason camp thus far … The group of sophomores will be relied upon to take over the load for the last year's senior class … Coach Patten brought in six freshmen this year … The recruiting class includes #Hilary Bungarden#, #Allie Carlson#, #Kelsey Geiger#, #Pamela Hartley#, #Amanda Hiatt#, and #Aleksandra Ochrymowicz# … The freshmen will provide depth for the Saints this season and Coach Patten believes this group will be very talented down the road.

Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers (2010 Record: 7-10, 3-7 MIAC)

The Cobbers will look to get back to the MIAC postseason this season after missing it last year … Concordia returns senior Melanie Gail, who was second on the team with eight singles victories … She was also second on the team with eight doubles wins … Sophomore Julie Olson was third on the team with seven doubles triumphs in 2010.
