DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell in its home regular season finale at Mars Lakeview Arena on Thursday evening by a 4-1 final against its Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and border rivals from the University of Wis.-Superior.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 9-14-1 on the season, including a 4-13-0 mark in the NCHA. The Yellowjackets improve to 13-10-1 on the season (10-7-0 NCHA) in breaking a five-game losing sterak.
The Saints got on the board first just 54 seconds into the game as #Jeremy Dawes# netted his team-high ninth goal of the year. #Riley Riddell# and #Cody Danychuk# had the assists.
While the Saints out-shot Superior 12-9 in the first period, the Yellowjackets took control in the second, scoring three goals on 20 shots in the period to pull away.
The first goal came just under two minutes in the period as Tom Buziakowski netted his third of the year for Superior with assists from Logan Isley and Zach MacKinnon. Another UWS goal followed just four minutes later by Josh Kesler, assisted by Matt Wiest and Colton Kennedy.
The final goal of the period for UWS came just before the 14-minute mark, as Jeff Forsythe scored with assists from Pat Dalbec and Kyle Leahy.
In the third period, the Saints offense came alive, matching the Yellowjackets with seven shots in the period, but they were not able to crack Superior goaltender Drew Strandberg.
While the Saints offense battled, Superior came back with a late goal by Joey Massingham to secure the victory. Dalbec and Leahy each earned their second assist of the night.
Strandberg finished with 20 saves for UWS in earning the victory. For CSS, #Brennan Poderzay# took a tough loss while making 32 saves.
St. Scholastica finished with seven penalties for 14 minutes while the Yellowjackets had five penalties for ten minutes. Neither team scored on the powerplay, with CSS scoreless in two opportunities and UWS in four.
