DULUTH, Minn.. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team remained at .500 on the season with a 3-3 overtime tie against the No. 10-ranked Hamline University Pipers on Saturday evening at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Saints' record moves to 7-7-1 on the season with the team's first overtime game of 2010-11. The Pipers move to 8-3-2 with the tie.
The two teams held even through 20 minutes with a scoreless first period as each team took nine shots.
Hamline got on the board quickly in the second, with Ryan Kupperman netting his third of the season just 22 seconds into the period with an assist from Brian Arrigoni.
CSS came back to tie it just seven minutes later with #Chad Golanowski# netting his first of the season with an assist by #Neil Sauter#.
Two minutes later, the Saints pulled ahead as #Jeremy Dawes# scored his sixth of the year with assists by #Riley Riddell# and #Tyler Miller#.
The Saints took four penalties for 16 minutes during the second period, and the Pipers finally pulled through late in the period as Arrigoni netted a powerplay tally to even the score at two apiece.
The two teams took the tie to the locker room after combining for 20 shots in the second period, but the Saints got back on the board early in the third to take a 3-2 lead as #Alex Valenti# netted his fifth of the year with assists by #Carter Davis# and #Brendan Bradbury#.
The score held until the halfway point of the period as Kirk Olimb tied the game again for Hamline with an assist by Brett Burgau.
The 3-3 score held through the end of the period as well as overtime, with the Saints managing the only shot in the extra session.
#Patrick Sullivan# earned the first tie of his career to move to 5-5-1 on the season. He made 26 saves for CSS while Matt Hemmingway made 22 saves for the Pipers.
Hamline finished one-for-eight on the powerplay as the Saints took eight penalties for 19 minutes. The Saints were scoreless in four man-advantages, as Hamline took eight minutes worth of penalties.
The Saints will hit the road next weekend to take on the University of Wis.-River Falls Falcons in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) series, beginning Friday night. The action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC, with the puck dropping at 7:00 p.m.
