Mayberry’s 31 Lifts Saints Past Finlandia

DULUTH, Minn. – Newcomer #Sean Mayberry# poured in 31 points to give the St. Scholastica men's basketball team a 89-79 victory over Finlandia University (Mich.) Tuesday night at Reif Gymnasium.

The Lions (4-14) scored the first four points of the game only to have the Saints respond with a 6-0 run with four points coming from #Brett Tester#. A Sean Mayberry (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) 3-pointer gave CSS its largest lead of the half of six with 9:40 on the clock.

However, Finlandia later came back with a 13-3 run to take a five-point lead with three minutes to go. The Lions led by six with two minutes remaining and went into halftime with a 40-35 lead.

The Saints (5-9) shot 41-percent in the first half, while the Lions shot 55-percent. CSS out-rebounded the Lions 19-14.

Finlandia held on to its lead until Mayberry tied the game with a layup with 11 minutes to go. The Lions managed to stay in front for the next five minutes until CSS went on a 17-3 run where Sean Mayberry (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minn.-Duluth)) went off, scoring 12 of the 17 points, including a desperation 3-pointer while being fouled to make a four-point game a seven-point margin. In fact, Mayberry scored 16 of the Saints' final 22 points to give CSS the 89-79 victory.

The Saints shot 61-percent in the second half to finish at 50-percent for the game. Finlandia finished at 53-percent for the game. St. Scholastica was 22-for-27 from the free throw line and committed a season-low nine turnovers, compared to 18 assists.

Mayberry had seven assists to go along with his 31 points in 27 minutes of action. Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) nearly had a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. #Pat Franko# added a career-high 11 points off the bench. Jerrod Owens and Anthony Grandberry each had 14 points to lead the Lions.

The Saints return to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play this weekend when they face Crown College on Friday night and Northwestern College on Saturday. Friday's game at Crown is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
