DULUTH, Minn. – The eighth-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team defeated Northwestern College, 9-0, to begin the day in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Baseball Tournament at Wade Stadium, but then fell to Bethany Lutheran for the second straight year, 5-2.
In the opening round game against Northwestern College, the Saints put the game away early scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. Five of the six runs scored in the inning were unearned thanks to two Northwestern errors. #Scott Greening# (

Jr.-Woodbury, Minn.), and #Andy Manos# (

That is all CSS starter #Jeff Adams# (

Manos added a RBI-double in the third, Kolodge had a RBI-single in the sixth, and #Brian Peterson# (
Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Hill-Murray) scored on an Eagle error in the seventh to make the final score 9-0.

The Saints got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a #Sean Claugherty# (
Sr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) lead-off home run over the right field wall.
The Vikings got that run back in the sixth to make it 5-1. CSS would add just one more run in the ninth when Greening scored on a passed ball as the Vikings prevailed 5-2.
#Matt Lewis# (
Jr.-Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) picked up the loss for the Saints, striking out six in 5.2 innings. Cody Hallahan struck out 11 in the complete-game victory for the Vikings.
