MEN’S TENNIS SWEEPS NORTHWESTERN AND MARTIN LUTHER

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated both Northwestern College and Martin Luther College today at the Central High School tennis courts.
 
The Saints improve to 9-9 overall and 8-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). CSS has won 83 straight conference matches.

The Saints started the day off by defeating Northwestern 7-2. CSS won two of the three doubles matches as the No. 2 team of #Jacob Engelstad# (So.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and #Tucker Combs# (Jr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) won 9-7 and the No. 3 team of #Tim Dean# (Jr.-Rhinelander, Wis.) and #Brian Lindberg# (So.-Hermantown, Minn.) won 8-3.

In singles, Engelstad won at the No.2 spot 6-0, 6-2. Lindberg was also victorious at the No. 3 flight 6-1, 6-3. At No. 4, #Kevin Hilpert# (So.-Stillwater, Minn.) defeated his opponent in a super tiebreaker 6-0, 4-6, (10-7). Dean took care of business at the No. 5 spot, winning 6-3, 6-2 and #Brendan Anderson# (Jr.-Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) won at the No. 6 flight 6-1, 6-0.

The Saints then went on to defeat Martin Luther College later on in the day 9-0.

The No. 1 doubles team of Anderson and #Dillon Sterle# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) defeated the Knights 8-3. The No. 2 team of Combs and Engelstad won again 8-0. The No. 3 team of Dean and #Joe Vidmar# (Jr.-Chisholm, Minn./Hibbing) won 8-1.

Sterle came from behind to win a hard fought match at the No. 1 singles position 5-7, 6-3, (10-7). Engelstad did not give up a game in his victory at No. 2. At No. 3, Lindberg won 6-1, 6-3. Hilpert shut out his opponent at the No. 4 flight and #Tom Schneuer# (Jr.-Duluth, Minn./Central) won at the No. 5 flight 6-1, 6-0. #Nick Lind# (So.-Cloquet, Minn.) was the final winner on the day at the No. 6 spot 6-0, 6-1.

The Saints will be in action tomorrow when they face the University of Minnesota-Morris. Action is set to begin at noon at the Central High School tennis courts.
