DULUTH, Minn. – The 14th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team blasted three home runs to sweep a doubleheader with conference rival Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 7-2 and game two 4-3.

Right-hander #Steve Gerten# (Sr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Sibley HS) took the mound in game one for the Saints, tossing six innings of two-hit ball and striking out five. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs to help his cause.

The Saints offense wore away at Vikings starter Michael Greibrok, scoring at least one run in the second through fifth innings. #Paul Kolodge# (Sr.-Cloquet, Minn.) put the Saints up in the second with an RBI double, and #Joe Link# (Jr.-Woodbury, Minn.) extended that lead to two with his second home run of the year in the third.

The Saints finally broke it open in the fourth as the first three hitters reached and later scored, including Kolodge's second RBI double of the game.

Saints first baseman #Sean Claugherty# (Sr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) extended his hitting streak with a home run in the fifth inning, and the Saints added one last insurance run before #Jake Nystrom# (Fr.-Fargo, N.D./North HS) closed out the seventh inning.

In game two, a first-inning double by Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) led to an early Saints lead as the Saints pushed the run across without another hit. Vikings lefty Ashton Dorris kept the Saints' bats quiet over the next four innings, striking out six before running into trouble in the bottom of the sixth.

#Matt Lewis# (Jr.-Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep.) tossed six innings, striking out seven and keeping the Vikings off the basepaths until the fifth inning, when the first three batters reached and scored to put the Vikings up 3-1 in the sixth inning for the second straight day.

The Saints finally got to Dorris in the sixth as #Brian Marshik# (Jr.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) reached base on a hit-by-pitch to open the inning, followed by Claugherty's second hit of the day, which extended his hitting streak to 23 games. This brought #Scott Greening# (Jr.-Antigo, Wis./Mesabi CC) to the plate, and he worked a full count against Dorris before blasting a three-run home run to left center field to put the Saints up 4-3 heading into the final inning.

The Saints relied on their freshman right-hander again to close out the game, as Nystrom came in to relieve Lewis in the bottom of the seventh, getting two groundballs, including a double play to earn his first collegiate save.

CSS improved to 26-3 with the season sweep of Bethany Lutheran and remain undefeated in the UMAC at 11-0. The Vikings fall to 19-6 overall and 9-3 in-conference.

The Saints will be at home again next weekend when they host the University of Minnesota-Morris for a three-game series. Friday night's single game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Wade Stadium/ All of the action can be heard on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
