DULUTH, Minn. – The 14th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team swept a doubleheader to open their home season on Tuesday night, defeating the Northland College LumberJacks by a score of 9-3 in game one and 15-6 in game two.
Catcher #Kyle Moody#
(So.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) started both games behind the plate for the Saints, and earned five hits on the day. He set a new career-best in game one when he knocked in five runs, and added two more in the second game.
Infielder #Andy Manos#
(Jr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) played both middle infield positions in the two games, knocking a two-RBI single in game one while going 2-for-5 for the day.
Senior right-handed #Jeff Adams#
(Sr.-Two Harbors, Minn.) took the mound for the Saints in game one, pitching five innings, including 3.2 innings of no-hit ball to start the game. He also struck out the side in the fourth inning to finish with six on the day. He was relieved in the sixth by #Matt Mikel# (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS), who gave up just one earned run to hold the lead and help Adams earn his fourth victory of the season in game one.
The Saints and 'Jacks scored early and often in the second game, as the two teams traded runs in the first inning before Northland pulled ahead 3-2 in the top of the second.
The lead did not last long as freshman righty #Michael Swenson#
(Fr.-Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) worked through initial struggles to shut down over his next two innings of work. He was relieved in the fifth by fellow freshman #Brian Houdek#
(Fr.-Mahtomedi, Minn.), who tossed 2.2 no-hit innings, striking out four LumberJacks to earn his first collegiate save.
The Saints took the lead for the first time in the game in the fourth, with three straight singles and four straight runners reaching to start the inning. The Saints followed up with another single by first baseman #Sean Claugherty#
(Sr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) and a hit batter to plate five runs on just the four hits.
Claugherty knocked in three runs on three hits including a double to lead the Saints. CSS hit four doubles, including three in the fifth inning, when they scored two more runs. The Saints broke the game completely open with a five-run sixth inning.

(Jr.-New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Villge HS) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while #Brian Marshik#
(Jr.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) led the team with three runs, scoring every time he reached base in game two.
The Saints improve to 23-3 on the season, including 8-0 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play. The LumberJacks fall to 4-14 on the season and 3-6 in the UMAC.
Next up for the Saints will be the highly anticipated three-game series against preseason conference favorite Bethany Lutheran College at Wade Stadium. The first game of the series will be Friday night with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. The game can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
