Claugherty extends hit streak to 18 games

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The 16th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team swept regional rival St. Olaf College in doubleheader this afternoon, winning game one, 14-6 and game two, 8-0.

The Saints improve to 21-3 overall and extend their winning streak to 14 games. The Oles fall to 11-11 overall. This was the first time the two teams met since 2007 and the first regular season sweep by the Saints since 2004.

In game one, six St. Olaf errors contributed to six unearned runs for CSS. Three errors in the top of the first by the Oles led to #Sean Claugherty# (Sr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) run. #Joe Link# (Jr.-Woodbury, Minn.) and #Brian Marshik# (Jr.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) had RBIs in the second and St. Olaf added a run in the bottom half to make it 3-1 after two.

The Oles' Carson Jones hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to St. Olaf its first lead of the game at 4-3. It remained that way until the top of the fifth when the Saints regained the lead by scoring six in the inning.

With one out, two walks and hit by pitch loaded the bases. #Paul Kolodge# (Sr.-Cloquet, Minn.) followed with a RBI-single. CSS then scored two off of a St. Olaf error and Link and #Andy Manos# (Jr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) had RBI-singles to extend it to 9-4.

In the sixth inning, #Scott Greening# (Jr.-Antigo, Wis.) scored on a wild pitch and #Chad Peterson# (Jr.-New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village) had a two-run single to make it 12-4. After St. Olaf plated two in the bottom of the sixth, the Saints got those two runs back in the seventh as #Brandon Peterson# (So.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) and #Tom Juberian# (So.-Park Rapids, Minn.) had RBIs to make the final score 14-6.

#Steve Gerten# (Sr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) improved to 6-0 this year, striking out seven in 5.1 innings. Erik Olson picked up the loss for the Oles. Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Saints offensively.

In game two, #Matt Lewis# (Jr.-Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) pitched a six-hitter and struck out seven to earn his first collegiate shutout.

CSS scored four in the bottom of the third as Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) had a RBI-double and Sean Claugherty (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) had a two-run triple. Claugherty upped his hitting streak to 18 games.

The Saints added three unearned runs in the fourth to make it 7-0 and Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) had a RBI-double in the sixth to make the final score 8-0. Paul Kolodge (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet Senior HS) and Tom Juberian (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) each had two hits to lead the CSS offense.

The Saints will have their 2010 home opener tomorrow at Wade Stadium when they host Northland College for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC and can be seen live, courtesy of the iFan Sports Network, at csssaints.com.
