MEN’S TENNIS GOES 1-1 AS A SPLIT SQUAD

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team had a split squad on Sunday and fell to Luther College (Iowa) 8-1, but defeated the University of Minnesota-Morris 5-4.

The Saints are now 6-9 overall and 5-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The four matches won by Morris is the most won against the Saints by a conference opponent since Morris took four matches against the Saints on May 6, 2005.

In a non-conference match against Luther in Lakeville, Minn. to begin the day, the lone winner for the Saints was #Tim Dean# (Jr.-Rhinelander, Wis.) at No. 4 singles. He was won the first set 6-4 and then his opponent retired. The No. 2 doubles team of #Jacob Engelstad# (So.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and #Tucker Combs# (Jr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) lost a tight match 9-7.

The other half of the team was in Morris, Minn. The Saints took two of the three doubles matches. The No. 2 team of #Joe Vidmar# (Jr.-Chisholm, Minn./Hibbing) and #Kolin Dean# (Fr.-Rhinelander, Wis.) won 8-1 and the No. 3 team of #Nick Lind# (So.-Cloquet, Minn.) and #Alex Nagle# (Fr.-Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) won 8-2.

In singles play, it was the bottom three flights that carried the Saints to victory. Lind won his first singles match of the season at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-4. At No. 5, Nagle won his first collegiate singles match, rallying from a set down 4-6, 6-2, (10-1). Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) also won his first collegiate match at the No. 6 spot and gave CSS the dual match victory with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph. It was the 80th straight UMAC dual match victory for the Saints.

The Saints will return to Duluth next weekend when it hosts North Central University in a conference match at Central High School on Friday. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. If it rains, the match will be moved into the Burns Wellness Fieldhouse on campus.
