NEW ULM, Minn. – The 16th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team completed the three-game series sweep of Martin Luther College today, taking both games of a doubleheader 8-0 and 19-8.

The Saints improve to 19-3 overall and 6-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The Knights fall to 0-19 overall and 0-7 in the league. This is the first time since 2007 that the Saints have swept all three regular season games from Martin Luther.

In game one, CSS got a great pitching performance from freshman #Jake Nystrom# (Fr.-Fargo, N.D./North) as it prevailed 8-0. Nystrom struck out six through six innings and allowed just three hits to improve to 2-0 this season.

After a scoreless first frame, the Saints picked up Nystrom as #Steve Gerten# (Sr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) had a RBI-single to make it 1-0 CSS after two. #Scott Greening# (Jr.-Antigo, Wis.) and #Paul Kolodge# (Sr.-Cloquet, Minn.) had RBIs in the third to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Saints then plated four in the fifth with RBI-singles coming from Greening and #Griffin Bell# (Jr.-Oconomowoc, Wis.) and RBI-doubles delivered by #Sean Claugherty# (Sr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) and Gerten. #Andy Manos# (Jr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to make the final score 8-0.

#Ben Grieger# (So.-Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) pitched a perfect seventh to keep the shutout in tact. Steve Gerten (West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Saints offensively.

In game two, the Saints would fall behind early only to come back and win comfortably 19-8.

#Kyle Moody#'s (So.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) two-run single in the top of the first gave CSS an early 2-0 lead. The Knights scored their first runs of the day, plating five in the bottom of the first to take a 5-2 lead.

Sean Claugherty (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) cut the margin to 5-3 in the second with a RBI-single and the Saints regained the lead in the third, scoring six runs in the inning. #Brandon Peterson# (So.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) had a two-run single in the inning to cap off the scoring at 9-5.

The Saints exploded for eight runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach. #Joe Link# (Jr.-Woodbury, Minn.) had a two-run double and Andy Manos (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS ) had two separate RBI-singles in the inning to extend it to 17-5. After Martin Luther cut the lead to 17-8, #David Vogelgesang# (Fr.-Hastings, Minn.) and #Brian Peterson# (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Hill-Murray) had RBI-singles in the sixth to make the final score 19-8.

In his first collegiate start, #Jake Snyder# (Fr.-Duluth, Minn./Central) earned the win, striking out three in four innings of work. #Matt Hanse# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and #Dan Ubl# (Fr.-St. Paul Park, Minn./Park) in their first collegiate appearances, pitched the final three innings. Brian Peterson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) had a career-high four hits with three RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Saints at the plate. Sean Claugherty (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) extended his hitting streak to 16 games.

The Saints will go out of conference on Monday when it faces regional rival St. Olaf College for a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Both of those games can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
