ST. PAUL – The 18th-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team opened up Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action today by sweeping Northwestern College by scores of 8-0 and 21-4, respectively, at Reynolds Field.

The Saints extend their winning streak to eight games and improve to 15-3 overall. The Eagles drop to 7-10 overall. The series was initially scheduled to be played on Friday and Saturday, but threatening weather moved the series up a day and both teams decided to play the doubleheader on the first day.

In game one, #Steve Gerten# (Sr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) improved to 5-0 on the year as he allowed just three hits over five innings and struck out five in the 8-0 CSS victory.

The Saints got the scoring started in the second as an Eagle-error extended the inning and allowed two CSS runs to cross the plate. In the top of the third, #Scott Greening# (Jr.-Antigo, Wis.) singled in #Brian Marshik# (Jr.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) and #Brandon Peterson# (So.-Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) had a sacrifice fly to extend the margin to 4-0.

St. Scholastica put the game away in the fifth, plating three in the inning. Greening drove in Marshik again and Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) along with #Paul Kolodge# (Sr.-Cloquet, Minn.) had RBIs in the inning. Peterson added his third RBI of the day in the seventh to make the final score 8-0.

Greening was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead CSS at the plate. #Josh Retka# (Jr.-Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) came in relief of Gerten and pitched two perfect innings, striking out two.

In the night cap, the Saints scored in each of the first three innings and plated seventh in the sixth on their way to a 21-4 victory.

#Joe Link# (Jr.-Woodbury, Minn.) doubled to begin the game and Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ) drove him in to give CSS an early 1-0 lead. Marshik and #Kyle Moody# (So.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) had RBI-singles in the second and #Sean Claugherty# (Sr.-Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) had two-run double to make it 5-0.

After Northwestern scored its first runs of the afternoon in the bottom of the second, CSS plated four more in the top of the third. #Andy Manos# (Jr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) had RBIs in the inning and #David Vogelgesang# (Fr.-Hastings, Minn.) had his first collegiate hit, driving in two with a double to make it 9-2.

It was another four-spot in the fifth as Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) supplied most of the scoring with a three-run double to make it 13-3. St. Scholastica added insult to injury by scoring seven in the sixth. Seven different Saints had RBIs in the inning to extend it to 20-3.

#Mark Harber# (Fr.-Austin, Minn.) had his first collegiate hit in the top of the seventh with a RBI-triple to drive in #Matt Mikel# (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) to make the final score 21-4. #Kyle Flagstad# (Fr.-Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) also had his first career hit in the contest.

#Jeff Adams# (Sr.-Two Harbors, Minn.) improved to 2-0 as he pitched four innings. #Brian Houdek# (Fr.-Mahtomedi, Minn.) saw his first action on the bump, not allowing a hit and striking out one in an inning of work.
